About
The Second Door Society (“we,” “us,” “our”) is a BC-registered non-profit with a global outlook.
We collect only the information required to deliver our services, operate this site, and meet legal obligations.
Our guiding principles are evidence, dignity, and due process.
Scope
This policy applies to theseconddoor.org and all pages we control, including intake/contact forms, newsletter sign-ups, partner or volunteer forms, and “Share Your Story.”
It does not cover third-party sites we link to (payment processors, podcast hosts, etc.).
Personal information we collect
- Contact data: name, email, phone (if provided)
- Case or inquiry details: information you choose to share
- Technical data: IP address, browser/device type, aggregated analytics
- Donations: processed by secure third parties; we receive only receipt data, never card numbers
How we use information
- Respond to inquiries and deliver requested services
- Coordinate advocacy and education programs
- Operate, secure, and improve our site and systems
- Send updates if you opt in (you may unsubscribe at any time)
- Comply with legal duties and protect safety
Legal bases
Consent, performance of a requested service, legitimate interest (security & analytics), or legal obligation.
Retention
We keep personal data only as long as necessary for service, audit, or legal reasons, then delete or de-identify it.
If you withdraw consent for optional programs (e.g., newsletters), your data is removed promptly.
Sharing & disclosure
- Service providers: hosting, email, forms, payments—under confidentiality
- Referrals: only with your permission and only what is necessary
- Legal / Safety: when required by law or to protect rights and security
Cookies & analytics
We use minimal, privacy-respecting analytics. You can restrict cookies in your browser. We never sell personal data.
Your rights
You may request access, correction, deletion, or a copy of your information, and withdraw consent for optional uses.
If you are covered by PIPEDA, GDPR, or equivalent laws, we honour valid requests consistent with those frameworks.
Children
Our site is not directed to children under 13. If a child has submitted personal data, a parent or guardian may contact us for removal.
Security
We apply reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards.
No system is entirely risk-free; please avoid sending highly sensitive data except through secure channels.
Governance & Contributor Privacy Addendum
Governance and Oversight
The Second Door Society operates under the guidance of a multidisciplinary group of professionals from several continents—lawyers, journalists, academics, social advocates, photographers, technologists, and artists—who contribute confidentially to humanitarian objectives.
Contributor Identity and Disclosure
To protect privacy and independence, contributors’ names are revealed only when:
- They provide a written statement for publication, and
- Explicit consent is recorded in advance.
Otherwise, comments appear under collective authorship (“The Second Door Society”) or a pseudonym such as Sodo. This allows members to work without risk or retaliation.
Internal Communications
All internal records and communications are handled with the same privacy safeguards described above. Access is restricted to authorised personnel and logged for accountability.
Ethics and Integrity
Our privacy protections express our founding principle: to defend dignity, enable truth, and protect those who protect others.
Privacy is not a barrier to accountability; it is the framework that lets justice operate without fear.
